During the special annual Board of Regents meeting held on October 18, 2017, Pierre Riopel, who has been a member since February 2012, was nominated as Chair for a three-year term. He succeeds Ms. Josée Forest-Niesing, who therefore assumes the position of Past-Chair. Ms. Forest-Niesing joined the Board in December 2003, and was Chair from 2011 until 2017. As for Elyse Clements, her engagement continues as she remains Vice-Chair for another year.

Mr. Pierre Riopel is a well-known man, particularly within the Franco-Ontarian community and the education field, for his numerous contributions over 25 years. He has worked at all levels of the education system (elementary/secondary, college and university). Mr. Riopel holds a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Toronto as well as an Honours B.A. in History with a Minor in Political Science, and a Bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Ottawa. Mr. Riopel was also trained at the Leadership Institute for Superintendents, Graduate School of Education from Harvard University, and has completed studies towards a PhD (in Education) at the University of Montreal. On October 5th, Mr. Riopel received the insignia of Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes académiques de la République française (Knight in the Order of the Academic Palms of the French Republic), a prestigious French award that recognizes those who actively contribute to culture and education, and to the expansion of universal values.

“We thank Ms. Forest-Niesing for her dedication. We are fortunate to have been able to benefit from her expertise, and her many strengths and talents during her six years as Chair of the Board,” states Dr. Sophie Bouffard, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sudbury. “We are also delighted to welcome Mr. Riopel in his new position. He has a remarkable professional background in the field of education, and knows our mission and vision well. He will surely take over brilliantly, at the head of the Board of Regents. It is a very judicious choice.”
