The Université de Sudbury acknowledges the Report from the French Language Services Commissioner and commits to fully restoring its compliance with its designation under the French Language Services Act, in particular Part 1 of the designation regarding courses and programs in French leading to the Bachelors of Arts degree. The institution is actively collaborating with its partners at the Ministry of Colleges and Universities and the Ministry of Francophone Affairs, as well as with its post-secondary partners, to ensure full compliance with its designation under the Act. The announcement of the implementation of 33 French-language programs and program options in the arts, humanities, social sciences, commerce, natural sciences, and health sciences marks a significant step toward restoring this compliance. This work is being carried out in close collaboration with the French Language Services Commissioner.
In 2021, the Conseil de gouvernance (Board) mandated the President to ensure that the institution preserves and complies with its designation under the French Language Services Act. The institution is proud to offer all services prescribed in Part 2 of its designation, including reception services, the sale of course materials, the provision of parking passes, the distribution of internal mail, library services, and the provision of housing in university residences.
The University is also committed to improving access to French-language services across all its activities, including in its governance. Since November 2021, all governance structures of the Université de Sudbury, including its Board and Academic Senate, have been operating in French. Members of the Board and the Academic Senate must also be proficient in French. Furthermore, both the Board and the Academic Senate must conduct their affairs in French, which includes all documentation.
“The reforms undertaken by the Université de Sudbury since 2021 aim not only to ensure the existence and active offering of French-language services, but to allow the French language to be creative, to reflect, and more importantly, to deliver results for all Ontarians, especially for the Franco-Ontarian society. Since these reforms, French at the University of Sudbury has ceased to simply be a service that is provided unevenly, and has become the driving force behind all its activities. By guaranteeing French-language services, the institution contributes to the promotion of the country’s official languages and fosters equitable and genuine bilingualism,” stated Serge Miville, Ph.D., President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sudbury.
